Marble and Design: when natural stone transforms and adds value to the home
Furnishing our homes is like taking care of our bodies: we want them to look good, to be enhanced by the right elements, to reflect our tastes and our ideas of beauty.
Marble, in this sense, offers a wide range of possibilities: its durability and great flexibility make it ideal for the creation of new elements of contemporary design, but with an innate elegance and timeless classicism.
Below we’ll see some of the furniture elements created by great architects and designers who have dedicated their lives to finding the best combinations of form, beauty and function.
1. DUETI – Achille Castiglioni
It was architect Achille Castiglioni who created the DUETI (also 2T) marble table: a modern oval supported by two T-shaped slabs in Nero Marquinia (pictured), Cremo Valencia, Bianco Pennsylvania, Carrara White or Calacatta; to obtain the special edge finish, the perimeter of the oval was ground and then polished by hand.
Castiglioni’s work has always been characterized by a search for functionality, also through the functional re-use of objects that were already in production.
2. INGIRUM – Adolfo Natalini
Not only magnificent tables, but also charming table centerpieces, simple and essential, a perfect combination of lines, shapes and colors. The architect Adolfo Natalini – founder of Superstudio, a remarkable collective that has changed the landscape of modern Italian architecture and design – designed several of them, such as the exemplary INGIRUM. It is made of White Carrara, Rosso Verona and Botticino marble.
3. UOVO DIVINO – Mario Bellini
The one thing that can never be missing in any home is the centerpiece. That unique, sometimes even bizarre object that is capable of attracting attention. An example of this is a peculiar bottle holder created by Mario Bellini, the architect who also designed the world’s first personal computer: the Uovo DiVino. The “Egg” is a Carrara marble sculpture designed to hold a precious wine bottle and its opening accessories. A perfect example of Made in Italy design flair and genius.
4. ANNIKA – Paolo Ulian
Even light wants to play its part. And what better way to make it the protagonist than with a lamp that can make it the absolute star of the room? The designer Paolo Ulian knows this and has created ANNIKA, a lamp made of the finest White Carrara marble. ANNIKA’s unique appearance is achieved thanks to an intricate design that allows the light to play with the marble, giving it a very contemporary look.
5. SMASH – Pierre Gonalons
For the living room, an essential element that is both functional and decorative, like a coffee table. The designer and architect Pierre Gonalons, who helped redesign the Renault 5, has created SMASH, a limited series of indoor side tables. The photo shows an example in Grand Antique and Giallo Siena, made with the lightweight marble technology on honeycomb.
